IRÓNICA OBSESIÓN
DE BRILLANTE MISTERIO

Ningún instrumento es indispensable. Ningún instrumento debe sobresalir. Cuando muchas voces intentan predominar solo se anhela la sordera. Con estas ideas Madrid y Scavone comenzaron a trabajar su segundo álbum. Buscaban crear estructuras más complejas que las que habían utilizado en su predecesor sin perder los rasgos que delineaban su estilo. Las sesiones de grabación contaron con muchos más invitados, sobre todo para los arreglos de voces que aparecen con mayor relevancia y nitidez; también incluyeron gaita gallega, acordeón, tempuk, cítara y viola. La necesidad de incluir nuevos timbres en su música los llevó a diseñar y construir sus propios instrumentos de percusión, para los que utilizaban botellones de plástico, láminas metálicas y tubos de cartón.
Más allá de la experimentación sonora, “Sang” nos ofrece canciones para disfrutar el domingo, a la tenue luz de la tarde, recostados sobre el sofá, en el living. Es una música hipnótica, no es para cualquiera ni para cualquier momento. Son canciones que avanzan lentamente sobre bases que crean climas densos y opresivos.
Madrid supone que los largos pasajes instrumentales de algunas de las canciones de “Sang” se justifican cuando recuerda que en esa época escuchaba los discos de Tortoise con mucha frecuencia. Por otro lado, había descubierto a Serge Gainsbourg y a The Pogues, los que nutrían su gusto por la canción y sus estribillos.

IRONIC OBSESSION
OF BRILLIANT MYSTERY

None of the instruments is essential. There must not be leading instruments. When there are too many voices trying to be heard your only wish is to be deaf. With these ideas in mind Madrid and Scavone started working on their second album. They looked forward to using more complex structures for their new songs without losing the style they´ve created for their previous album. Lots of guest musicians collaborated for this new record, most of them appear to empower and give more clarity to the vocal arrangements, others on bagpipe, accordion, tempuk, toy instruments and viola. The need to include new tones on their music lead them to design and built their own percussive instruments with big plastic bottles, metal sheets, junk and cardboard tubes.
Beyond sound experimentation, “Sang” offers songs that can be enjoyed on Sundays, in the afternoon´s dim light, leaning on a sofa, at the living room. It is a hypnotic music, not for everyone and for a specific moment of your day. These are songs that move forward slowly over rhythms that create a dense and oppressive mood.
Madrid thinks that the long instrumental passages of some of the songs included on “Sang” can be explained by his increasing interest on Tortoise´s albums. On the other hand, Serge Gainsbourg and The Pogues were feeding his love for songs and choruses.
